Self portrait: My bedroom

Remember that show Room Raiders on MTV? Where they decided if they wanted to date strangers based on their bedroom, and nothing else? Well maybe MTV was onto something with this genius of an idea. I'm totally kidding, but seriously, you can learn a lot about someone based on their bedroom.I've had my fair share of bedrooms. Since going to boarding school at age 16, I was gifted with the opportunity of moving every. single. year. Combine that with college apartments, different summer programs, and various pads in my young adulthood, I've probably had over a dozen rooms. Because of this, I learned the importance of having a safe place to return to that is a representation of ourselves. Every object in your room has a meaning and purpose, even if it's not something super deep.

Bedrooms exist for creativity and self-expression and nothing else.

So here is a tour of the greatest place on earth: my room.Gray Wall:I am a huge fan of color, and used to hate neutrals and grays. But now I actually can have more fun with colors because of my gray wall by experimenting with objects against it. // In my old apartment bedroom I painted just an accent wall with this same gray. Now I have a whole gallon of it and bring it with me anytime I move. I just love how the hues seem to change throughout different points of the day based on the natural lighting my room gets. This glass vase was actually a free water bottle from a Zumba class. I took it just for the bottle. Yay free decor! I put a leaf from our montsera plant in it. Also, I designed the books for a school project back in the day.Mini gallery wall: Last year I went on 2 grand adventures: Thailand and Israel. Of course I got some art from there.I had a rough time health-wise in mid-2016, and after that, the thought of traveling abroad and being far from home was terrifying. It was odd, because normally I love to travel and have even gone abroad by myself. But I couldn't even fathom hopping on a plane and being far away from my comfort zone.

But I took these opportunities anyway, because I didn't know the next time I would get to.

In the back of my mind I knew I wanted to go so badly. So with a lot of edibles and encouragement from my peeps, I worked up the nerve and now I couldn't be happier I went. 2017 began as full of fear, but by the end I remember a love I forgot I had: traveling.Of course these pieces hold nice memories, but they also remind me that no matter how anxious I feel, I can still take control of my life and my decisions. And that it's not about not feeling afraid—it's about feeling afraid but doing it anyway. And there’s nothing wrong with feeling anxious, y’all.Vintage finds: After searching f o r e v e r for a gold vintage mirror, I randomly found the perfect one at an antique store near my apartment! And I purchased this 1950's wooden folding chair from Etsy for like $20. It's lightweight and comfy AF. // Below: the blue glass bottles I got from a day of antiquing in the Berkshires with my boyfriend, Rom (because we are super rowdy people). They're from 1800's.When we're younger, being sent to our rooms was the equivalent is going to jail. As an adult, being sent to my room would feel like more of a reward than a punishment TBH.When I walk into my room everyday my soul feels happy. And I hope yours does the same.Seee yaaaaa,-Abby
